Our school of 210 students from PrePrep to Year 10 is located just inland from the Gulf of Carpentaria, approximately 1½ hours by plane or 8 hours by car from Cairns in Far North Queensland. Since the beginning of 2014, we have also started to enrol students in our Year 11 and 12 Pathways program.
Despite the fact that we are a remote school in an isolated part of Queensland, we have so much to offer our students and the community. As a National partnerships school, we developed a strategic plan (PDF, 750 KB) to guide us on our journey over the next four years. Our school’s commitment to an improvement agenda is also evidenced through the Great Results Guarantee (PDF, 1 MB).
As well as our commitment to getting students to school every day (Every Day Counts), our focus has always been on literacy and numeracy. We continue to devote a significant amount of time and resources into all aspects of literacy and numeracy - every day. This is further evidenced through a structured timetable that is devoted to each of the key aspects.
The Kowanyama school community is a friendly and welcoming community that remains committed to quality education for all students. School staff (along with the wider school community) are always energetic and enthusiastic. We always remain focussed in our efforts to promote positive and sustainable change through a supportive school environment. Working and living in the Kowanyama community is a rewarding and enjoyable experience for us all and we look forward to sharing this journey with you.
